To My Russian Friend - for Her Birthday
My dear friend from another country - The world has changed - and so have we. Where I grew up, now grows grass, Where I immigrated, I will build my house. For sixteen years we have been far away; At first, it was so easy to stay In touch, through writing letters, And exchanging cards. And now there is the Internet and WhatsApp, But our communication has dried up. The world is cruel, our countries fight, And our friendship is complicated now. This poem is for you, my friend - Hugs, kisses, and Bolshoy Privet. Our fates are parallel, yet near, I wish you a happy, happy birthday, dear. Bolshoy Privet means “How are you?”, literally “Great Hello”. After this poem was published many friends and relatives told me how true and timely it sounded, and asked me if it was about them! Both versions of "To My Russian Friend for her Birthday" were published in Spring 2018 Issue of Time of Singing (A Christian Poetry Magazine)
